Today Liam and I decided we wanted to mix it up for lunch. I had ordered several copies of Autumn Calabrese’s new cookbook, FIXATE. I also brought one back from Coach Summit 2015 in Nashville over the weekend. This cookbook offers tons of great recipes across all categories. Since the container system is being incorporated into new fitness programs (more than just Autumn’s offerings), having this book is a game changer.
Our shopping was done, and we had the necessary ingredients to make several different new dishes. Of course, I started with the one that I wanted the most. LOL… So Turkey Sloppy Joes it was!
Have you ever worked in a restaurant that serves sloppy joes? I have… Want to know the secret recipe? Cooked hamburger, ketchup, mustard, and sugar. Now, I’m not going to give away the ratios of those things, but I’ll say they err more on the side of being unhealthy. The sloppy joes in this cookbook had me throwing in things I would never have thought of… Hot sauce, raw honey… Those were just two of the ingredients I was surprised to be using.
It didn’t take long to have dinner finished and plated. Altogether, it was about 35 minutes until it was ready. I did a few things slightly differently than directed. One was cooking the turkey meat off in water to keep it moist and help it crumble better. Another was eliminating the tomato paste… Okay, so I thought I had all the ingredients! 😉
Here it is plated… So what did I think? It was wonderful!!! Way more flavorful than sloppy joe normally is. It wasn’t even comparable to Manwich! I actually wanted more, but I had a 1.25 cup serving (the recipe makes 4 servings), which was enough to stuff a pocket thin and still have this bowl leftover. There’s no reason to be greedy just because it’s so good, right?
I wasn’t the only one who thought so… Here’s the first impression…

I guess you could say it’s momma and toddler approved… He’s trying to SHOVE my hand to his mouth!!!
It got daddy’s approval, too when he had the leftovers for dinner. 😉
